If you think the Andover YMCA has been just a little quieter lately, it's not your imagination.
Several days ago, Executive Director Adam Kahrl did away with the radio in the upper level of the Y. The branches of all Greater Wichita YMCAs typically have a station playing in the background in their weight rooms and cardio areas.
However, the Andover YMCA is able to receive just one radio station. Its receiver might be in a bad spot of the facility, Kahrl said.
"Then again, I can't even get my cell phone to (work) in my office," Kahrl said. "But that's another story."
So why not just play the one radio station it can get?
Well, in the morning it was talk radio that not everyone appreciated, Kahrl said. In the evenings it was "Delilah," a relationship advice program from a thrice-divorced female host who mixes in a health share of schmaltzy love songs. Not exactly music to get pumped up by.
Kahrl said he heard enough complaints to relay them to Greater Wichita YMCA general executive Dennis Schoenebeck. They agreed it wasn't a pressing problem and to ax the radio for now.
So at least for now, Andover Y members will have to rough it with the dozens of flat-screen televisions in their new $25 million facility.
