More than 65 Andover families will be served this year through the Andover Caring and Sharing Program. The families, many with children, will be provided with a holiday food basket, staple food items, presents for kids and gift certificate for older children.
Families are nominated and screened to determine their needs. All donations to the program are tax-deductible. The program accepts toys, gifts and food items as well as cash and mailed monetary donations. Delivery to the families occurs on Dec. 17.
Six sites have been designated for drop off of donated toys, gifts and food items from Nov. 27 through Dec. 12. They are: Andover Fire Station, 911 N. Andover Road; Andover Public Library, 1511 E. Central; Andover YMCA, 1115 E. US Highway 54; Equity Bank, 225 W. Central; Stooges, 220 W. 3rd Street; and Timbuktu, 1251 N. Andover Road.
"The program began in 1995 and the number of families it serves has steadily increased due to community support and coordination," said Susan Bradley, Associate Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts at Butler Community College and one of many community volunteers.
Many Andover individuals and groups support the program including the fire and police departments, high school and middle school clubs, the 4-H, the PEO Club, churches, local businesses and Butler Community College, Bradley added. The Andover police and fire departments assist with collection and distribution.
Cash donations may be made at Ace Hardware, 642 N. Andover Road and mailed monetary donations may be sent to Andover Caring and Sharing, P.O.Box 413, Andover, KS 67002. These donations should be received no later than December 12.
Another opportunity to participate in the Andover Caring and Sharing Program will be during the annual Hometown Christmas to be held Dec. 10 at the Andover Central Park Lodge. Food, rides, crafts, carols and Santa will be a part of Hometown Christmas from 6-8 p.m. Admission to this event is cans of food or cash donations, which will go to the chosen families.
